Moderates risk becoming second opposition party as voters leave

The Moderate Party must halt a loss of voters in a specific part of Sweden to avoid not only ending up in opposition but also becoming the second-largest opposition party, SVT reports.

“Now they must, as one Moderate told me, stop the voter exodus in a specific area,” election reporter Fouad Youcefi said.

The Sweden Democrats have had greater support than the Moderates in every SVT and Verian opinion poll since May last year. If an election were held today, the governing parties would lose by a wide margin, while the Moderates would become only the second-largest opposition party.

SVT says the Moderates need to focus on one particular part of Sweden and take three steps to prevent that outcome. Youcefi outlines the party’s challenges in a report published by SVT.

The Moderates won the prime minister’s post in 2022 despite recording their worst election result in 20 years. Their polling figures are now weak ahead of this year’s election.
