European Movement accepts voters’ rejection of renewed EU talks

The European Movement respects the democratic result of Iceland’s referendum, in which voters rejected reopening membership talks with the European Union, mbl.is reported.

“We still consider it important for Iceland to take an active part in European cooperation,” the movement said in a statement. “Although Iceland will remain outside the EU, we are closely connected to Europe through the EEA, Schengen, NATO and many other essential cooperation projects that Iceland cannot do without. Europe’s influence on Iceland will not disappear.”

The movement said nearly half of the country had voted to continue on a European path, which it said would have brought a more stable economic environment, greater influence and a stronger position for Iceland among other democracies.

It also said the 105,339 Icelanders who supported reopening the talks should be met with understanding and respect for their views.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone who contributed to the campaign over the past few months. Grassroots activity showed that the European idea in Iceland is strong and alive,” the statement said.

The European Movement said it would now continue working to strengthen Iceland’s ties with Europe, defend European cooperation and democratic values, and take part in informed debate about Iceland’s and Europe’s future.
