No vote leads in Iceland referendum on EU accession talks

The no side was leading as Iceland counted votes in a referendum on whether to resume accession negotiations with the European Union, mbl.is reported.

Final results from the Northwest constituency showed 11,953 votes, or 62.9%, against restarting the talks. The yes side received 7,060 votes, or 37.1%. There were 74 blank ballots and 68 invalid ballots.

In the South constituency, 20,597 voters, or 60.5%, voted no, while 13,473, or 39.5%, voted yes. Of the 42,136 registered voters there, 34,305 ballots were counted, giving a turnout of 81.4%.

Results from the Northeast constituency also showed a majority against restarting the negotiations, with 61.2% voting no. mbl.is said the emerging result indicated that Iceland would not resume talks with the European Union.
