elections, Iceland, referendum

Supporters on both sides celebrated at election-night gatherings in Kolaportið and Hafnarhús, mbl.is reported. The result remained too close to call after early results were announced.

The No side led after the first results from the rural constituencies, but figures from the Reykjavik constituencies put the Yes side ahead. The pattern broadly matched opinion polls conducted before the vote.

Cheers first erupted at the No campaign’s gathering when the initial results were read out. Celebrations later broke out at the Yes gathering after the Reykjavik figures were announced.

The race remained extremely close, and the final results were not expected until early Monday morning.
