No side takes lead in latest Iceland vote count

The no side has taken a narrow lead over the yes side in Iceland’s vote count, mbl.is reported on Sunday, with 50.1 per cent compared with 49.9 per cent for yes.

Final results have been reported from both Reykjavík constituencies. The gap between the two sides narrowed in the final figures there, although yes remained ahead.

In the Southwest constituency, figures published at 2.30am showed no in front after 32,800 votes had been counted. No had 51.5 per cent, while yes had 48.5 per cent.

Opinion polls had shown the strongest support for yes in the capital region, while voters outside the capital had tended to favour no.

For no to be prevented from winning, the yes side would need either a significant turnaround in the Southwest constituency or for the postal and absentee votes counted last to favour yes strongly in the rural constituencies.

A substantial number of votes still remain to be counted in all constituencies where the count is incomplete. More figures are expected from the Southwest and rural constituencies.

Centre Party leader Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, Independence Party leader Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir and Progressive Party leader Lilja Alfreðsdóttir have supported the no campaign.
