No vote leads in South Iceland as referendum count continues

No votes were leading in Iceland’s referendum on whether to resume accession talks with the European Union as counting continued early Sunday, mbl.is reported.

The third figures from the South constituency showed 13,397 no votes, or 60.8 per cent, compared with 8,636 yes votes, or 39.2 per cent. A total of 22,189 ballots had been counted. There were 89 blank ballots and 67 invalid ballots, with 42,136 voters registered in the constituency.

Final figures from Reykjavík’s northern and southern constituencies had also begun to arrive. The yes side’s lead narrowed slightly in both constituencies, according to mbl.is, while newer figures from the Southwest constituency saw the no side move ahead.

Election-night gatherings at Hafnarhúsið and Kolaportið in Reykjavík were winding down. Political scientist Hafsteinn Einarsson said on RÚV that the results appeared to be moving towards a no victory, although the outcome remained uncertain.
