Lithuanian journalist says Iceland holds special place in Lithuania

A Lithuanian journalist covering Iceland’s referendum on European Union membership said the country holds a special place in the hearts of Lithuanians, mbl.is reports.

Milda, a correspondent for Lithuania’s state broadcaster in Brussels, was attending the yes-side’s election watch at Hafnarhús to report on the vote.

Asked what possible Icelandic membership of the EU would mean for Lithuania, Milda said it was too early to say.

“Of course, we should perhaps first see whether you join the EU or not,” she said.

She said Iceland was especially important to Lithuania because it was the first country to recognise Lithuania’s independence in 1990. She added that streets in Lithuania had been named after Iceland because of the country’s role.

“So we care very much about it. And we are very happy that you are doing so well and living a good life here,” Milda said.

“I think we will be happy with your decision, whichever way it goes. If you join the union, we will be part of the same family. If not, then that is what you want.”
