Iceland opens polling stations nationwide

Polling stations opened across Iceland at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with most scheduled to remain open until 10 p.m., mbl.is reports.

At Breiðagerðisskóli, a school in Reykjavík, a representative of the local electoral commission rang in the start of voting at 9 a.m., reviving a once-established tradition.

Eva B. Helgadóttir, chair of the superior electoral commission for Reykjavík North, said the opening had proceeded smoothly. All officials were present at Reykjavík City Hall by 6.30 a.m., while local electoral commissions collected voting materials for their polling stations between 7.30 and 8 a.m.

There are 24 polling stations in Reykjavík’s two constituencies.

The first figures on voter turnout were due to be published at 10 a.m. on Reykjavík City’s website. Turnout in the Reykjavík North and South constituencies can be followed there throughout the day.
