Halldór Benjamín votes against restarting Iceland’s EU talks

Economist and CEO Halldór Benjamín Þorbergsson said he voted against Iceland joining the European Union and restarting accession talks, mbl.is reported on Saturday.

Þorbergsson cast his ballot at Hagaskóli, a school serving as a polling station, after campaigning in recent weeks for the Áfram Ísland movement.

“I am a positive no voter,” he said.

Þorbergsson described the campaign as highly rewarding and enjoyable. He said the movement had held numerous meetings across the country and that several thousand people had registered to take part.

More than 2,000 people attended the movement’s outdoor rally at Austurvöllur in Reykjavík on Thursday, which he called an unforgettable experience.

Asked how he expected the voting day to develop, Þorbergsson said he was cautious by nature but that the campaign would do everything it could to encourage people to vote.

“The more people who express their opinion, the better, because that strengthens the foundations of democracy,” he said.
