A closure of the right turn from Miklabraut to Grensásvegur for westbound traffic has caused major delays, mbl.is reports.
Long queues have formed at the intersection of the two roads. Ylfa Rakel Ólafsdóttir, a project manager at Vegagerðin, said longer working hours would not necessarily make each closure significantly shorter, despite the fact that no work is being carried out in the evenings when traffic is lighter.
She asked the public to be patient, drive carefully and take account of workers in the area.
Further changes will be made to the intersection in the coming weeks. The project includes four new raised pedestrian crossings at locations where traffic turns right from the main road through what are known as right-turn bypasses.
Lighting will also be improved with new light poles and street lamps to provide better illumination at the crossings. The aim of the work is to slow traffic.
