Vandals tear EU slogans from hay bales in Húsavík

Mbl.is reports that signs bearing the slogan “EU – no thanks” were torn from about one-third of the hay bales distributed around Húsavík on private properties with permission.

The bales had been placed around the town two days earlier. They no longer looked the same the following morning, when the signs had been removed from roughly one-third of them.

Stefán Guðmundsson, a Húsavík resident who helped distribute the bales, said he and others had completed the work at about 10pm. People arriving at work at 3am noticed that the signs had been removed.

Stefán believes the signs were taken about two hours after the group finished distributing the bales. He said he had a good idea who was responsible and described the behaviour as childish.

“For me, actions like this reflect all the other methods used by the yes side. This is simply an expression of irrationality and foolishness,” Stefán told mbl.is.

He said the group planned to restore the signs and would then consider publishing pictures of those responsible. More than half of the hay bales were still displaying the slogan.
