A 16-year-old boy who killed a 52-year-old man in Iitti when he was 15 has been detained on suspicion of aggravated assault, Yle reports.

The Helsinki District Court detained the boy on Thursday on probable cause. The suspected offence took place on Friday, August 21.

Yle was unable to reach the lead investigator for comment.

The boy has been charged with the murder of the 52-year-old man and was ordered to undergo a psychiatric examination in an interim judgment. The report on his mental state was recently completed.

He had remained at liberty while awaiting the final judgment. The Päijät-Häme District Court found in its interim judgment that he had acted as described in the charges. The final judgment will be issued by the court next week.

The boy admitted in court earlier this year that he had caused the victim’s death in late August 2025. He denied the prosecutor’s sentencing demand and admitted to manslaughter committed in excessive self-defence as a young offender.

He killed the man in the victim’s apartment in Iitti, using several different implements. According to the interim judgment, the act was committed brutally and cruelly.

Ilta-Sanomat was the first to report the detention and the new crime suspicion.
