Miriam Norðberg calls for regional equalisation and less tunnel debate

Miriam Jannit Norðberg, director of the Sports High School in Vágur, says the Faroe Islands need a policy for outlying regions and financial equalisation between areas, Kringvarp Føroya reported.

Norðberg spent 12 years abroad, including two years in the Netherlands and 10 years in Denmark. She said the Faroe Islands could learn from other countries.

“It is strange that nobody talks about financial equalisation between areas in the Faroe Islands, because as far as I know, there is some form of equalisation in all the other Nordic countries,” she said.

She said a policy for outlying regions and equalisation, similar to those in other Nordic countries, would make life fairer for people living outside the central areas. She also said all public institutions should have a policy for outlying regions.

Norðberg added that the extensive discussion about the Suðuroy tunnel should receive less attention because the project was already moving forward.

She made the comments in an interview on the radio programme Summarmorgun.
