Second car crashes into new light rail, police suspect red light

A car collided with a Hovedstadens Letbane light rail train at the junction of Nybrovej and Buddingevej in Lyngby on Thursday morning, with police suspecting that the driver went through a red light, DR reports.

The collision was reported to North Zealand Police at 7.24am. The driver was not seriously injured but was assessed at the scene by ambulance staff, police duty officer Mikkel Thrane told DR.

The crash occurred on the northern section of the light rail, which opened on Saturday with several stops in Lyngby. A passenger car also collided with the light rail on Buddingevej in Gladsaxe on Saturday evening. Police in the Copenhagen Western Suburbs are still searching for the driver who fled that scene.

The traffic lights at the junction had earlier failed, prompting police to direct traffic, but they were operating normally again on Thursday morning.

Following the crash, replacement buses operated between Buddinge and Lundtofte. Light rail services have since resumed normal operation, although with delays, Metroservice told P4 Trafik.

Hovedstadens Letbane opened with 12 stations in autumn 2025 and added a further 17 stations to its route on Saturday.
