Parliament approves compensation for Greenlandic women in IUD case

Denmark’s parliament has approved compensation of 300,000 kroner for Greenlandic women who were fitted with an IUD without their consent or without sufficient consent, DR reports.

The compensation follows an agreement reached by the previous SVM government and a very broad majority in parliament.

Qarsoq Høegh-Dam, a member of parliament from the Greenlandic party Naleraq, thanked lawmakers for approving the measure and called it “the tip of the iceberg”.

“It is the least we can do,” Høegh-Dam said from the parliamentary floor.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Jens-Frederik Nielsen, head of Greenland’s government, apologised last year on behalf of both Denmark and Greenland.
