More than a quarter of left-green voters reject Left Party in government

More than one in four left-green voters oppose the Left Party joining the government after the election, according to a Verian survey commissioned by SVT. At the same time, one in five Moderate voters oppose the Sweden Democrats entering government, despite Ulf Kristersson’s promise to offer the party ministerial posts if his side wins.

Nearly half of left-green voters said they supported the Left Party joining the government, while 27 percent said they were opposed.

Opposition was highest among Centre Party voters, with 78 percent rejecting the prospect of Left Party ministers.

“Centre Party voters are therefore close to the position taken by the party leadership on this issue,” said Per Söderpalm, Verian’s polling director.

On the other side of the political spectrum, most voters supported the Sweden Democrats joining the government after the election. Among voters for the parties represented in the current governing arrangement, 13 percent said they opposed the Sweden Democrats entering government.

“There are quite a lot of voters who are sceptical about both the Sweden Democrats and the Left Party joining the government after the election,” Söderpalm said.

He said the figures were broadly comparable, but noted that more Sweden Democrats than Left Party supporters responded to the survey, which had some effect on the results. Overall, he said, left-green voters were more opposed to the Left Party entering government than the other side’s voters were to the Sweden Democrats doing so.

One in five Moderate voters oppose Sweden Democrats in government

Moderate leader Ulf Kristersson promised this spring that Sweden Democrats leader Jimmie Åkesson would be offered a ministerial post if the parties won the election.

However, 19 percent of Moderate voters said they were opposed to the Sweden Democrats joining the government.

“That is almost one in five Moderates who are very or fairly negative towards the Sweden Democrats in government. There are definitely still groups in the party who do not think it is a good idea,” Söderpalm said.

Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson has not yet set out in detail how she wants to form a government. When asked during the election campaign, she has said she is open to cooperating with “many parties”.

How the survey was conducted

Verian conducted the survey from July 28 to August 16, 2026. It was based on 6,047 web interviews with members of the public aged 19 to 84 through the Sifo panel.

Respondents from the Social Democrats, Left Party, Green Party and Centre Party were asked how they viewed the Left Party joining the government after the election. Respondents from the Moderates, Christian Democrats, Sweden Democrats and Liberals were asked how they viewed the Sweden Democrats joining the government.
