A couple who shared a 600-gram Danish Wagyu ribeye at Esmée restaurant in Copenhagen received a bill of about 95,000 Icelandic krónur, mbl.is reports.
Jóhanna Ósk and Ómar Jökull visited the restaurant near Nyhavn and Strøget earlier this month. They decided to share the steak, which was served with potatoes and other accompaniments, and ordered red wine with it.
They noticed that no price was listed for the steak, described on the menu as a Danish Wagyu ribeye from Norlin.
“We just happened to walk in and ordered one steak. We expected nothing other than an ordinary price,” Jóhanna Ósk told mbl.is. She recently recounted the experience on social media.
The steak cost about 60,000 krónur
“Then the bill arrived,” Jóhanna said. “It was 95,000 or something, and the steak cost around 60,000 krónur.”
For comparison, flights for two people to Copenhagen with Icelandair can be found for 60,000 krónur, according to the report.
Asked whether they had not paused at the sight of a Wagyu steak without a listed price, Jóhanna laughed and said they had already had one or two Aperol Spritz drinks.
The couple were fortunate that they had decided to share one steak. Jóhanna said she was not very hungry and that they now laugh about the incident. She described it as an unforgettable memory, while acknowledging that she would try to avoid making the same mistake again.
She also said the steak was exceptionally tasty.
Norlin produces fullblood Wagyu
Norlin Wagyu is a Danish Wagyu cattle farm in Kirke Hyllinge on Zealand, west of Copenhagen.
The farm’s founder became interested in Wagyu after eating Kobe beef tartare in 2017 while studying economics. He began studying agriculture in 2019 with the goal of breeding fullblood Wagyu.
Norlin emphasises that its cattle are fullblood Wagyu rather than cattle that are only partly Wagyu. The animals are kept outdoors and used for natural grazing during the summer. They are later given specially formulated, energy-rich feed to develop the heavy fat marbling for which the meat is known.
