Suspected drone sighting in Helsinki turns out to be a kite

A possible drone sighting in Helsinki’s Myllypuro residential district turned out to be a kite, Yle reported. Police found it in the top of a spruce tree after following line material discovered in the area.

The Emergency Response Centre received a report of a possible drone sighting at 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday. Residents had reported signs that might have indicated a drone.

Police did not find any flying object, and no one reported seeing a drone. The only evidence was line material found in several places in the residential district and surrounding terrain. Residents also brought material they had found to police.

Police initially could not determine where the line began or ended and speculated that it could be connected to something other than a drone. Later in the evening, following the line led officers to the kite in the spruce tree.

Myllypuro is not a no-fly zone, so flying drones there would in itself be permitted. Police said the matter might not be investigated further and that no official report might be filed because no drone was found.
