Minister reviews proposed changes as parliament considers 750 fishing days

The minister for fisheries, Bárður á Steig Nielsen, will review recommendations to change the rules for group 5B, Kringvarp Føroya reports. The recommendations would give small fishing boats in the group 750 additional fishing days this year.

The minister is expected to meet representatives of the Faroese parliament’s business committee soon.

The committee majority recommends setting a minimum landing threshold for a trip to count as a fishing day. It proposes that the threshold be 150 kilograms.

The majority also recommends raising the current threshold of 200,000 kroner for when small fishing boats move from group 5B to group 5A. The recommendation does not specify the proposed new threshold in the report.

The Faroese parliament is considering the minister’s proposal to grant group 5B boats 750 additional fishing days. All but one member of the business committee recommends that parliament approve it. The proposal is due to be put to a vote after its second reading today.
