Grindavík school welcomes students back after nearly three years

Grindavík school welcomed nearly 30 students back to class after almost three years without schooling in the town, mbl.is reports.

Twenty-six students were registered when the school reopened on Tuesday, with students in every year except the second and seventh grades. They will be taught together by grade level in their home classrooms.

Headteacher Guðlaug Erlendsdóttir said the school’s reopening was a joyful occasion.

“It was a happy moment,” Guðlaug told Morgunblaðið.

She said there was considerable excitement about the school year, but that school administrators were prepared for anything because nature could always be unpredictable.

Evacuation plans have been prepared in case the town needs to be evacuated again. Regular drills will be held with students to practise the procedures.

“Everyone has a role and knows exactly what they need to do,” Guðlaug said.

The town of Grindavík recently bought a vehicle to transport schoolchildren in the event of an evacuation. Two vehicles will be available, each with space for about eight children, while the town’s fire service will have a third vehicle ready if an evacuation is needed.
