Faroes are getting warmer throughout the year

The Faroe Islands are becoming warmer year-round, according to KVF, although forecasters do not expect heatwaves like those seen elsewhere in Europe.

Deaths, drought and wildfires have been among the consequences of heatwaves in Europe this summer. Turið Laksá, a meteorologist at the Faroese Meteorological Office, said temperatures in the Faroe Islands had also risen and that the increase was occurring throughout the year.

The average temperature in 2025 was 8.1 degrees Celsius, which was 1.1 degrees higher than the average for the period from 1991 to 2020.

Laksá said people in the Faroes did not need to be concerned about heatwaves, but should bear in mind that the global situation was less stable than they had been used to.

That applied to both the climate and relations between countries, said Ragnheiður Bogadóttir, a lecturer in social sciences at the University of the Faroe Islands. Laksá and Bogadóttir discussed the issue on KVF’s Breddin programme.
