Yle reports that police in southeastern Finland are investigating a case in which an underage boy is suspected of distributing nude images of several young girls, at least partly created using artificial intelligence.

Police have received several dozen reports related to the case. Investigators believe there may be several dozen victims, possibly more than 100, according to investigation leader Pia Katajala.

All the suspected victims are minors, and police currently believe they are from the Lappeenranta area. The suspect also lives in Lappeenranta, and police know his identity. The victims reportedly include girls known to the suspect as well as online acquaintances.

Police are investigating the case under the offence of distributing an image sexually depicting a child. The classification may change as the investigation progresses. If any adult complainants are identified, their cases will be investigated as the unauthorised distribution of a sexual image.

Katajala said it had been only a matter of time before a case of this kind came before the Southeastern Finland Police Department. Iltalehti was the first to report the case.
