Minke whale calf struggles for survival at Þorlákshöfn harbor in Iceland

A minke whale has washed ashore at the small boat harbor in Þorlákshöfn today, struggling for survival. Rescuers are working to pull the animal back into the sea, as it has been identified as a calf. Young people gathered on the beach express curiosity about the fate of the helpless calf.

The whale, which is still alive but fighting for its life, has drawn attention, prompting efforts from rescue teams to return it to the ocean. Representatives from the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (MAST) are on-site, assessing the best approach to assist the whale. Meanwhile, local police are also present to provide support.

According to reports, the whale is currently on dry land, but in collaboration with MAST, efforts will be made to rescue it. There may be attempts to get the whale back in the water during the evening tide, depending on its condition.

Earlier, there were speculations that the whale might be a different species, but that has yet to be confirmed. Rescue teams are actively considering how best to assist the whale and have already started spraying water over it to keep it hydrated. They have also covered it with wet blankets to provide some relief.
