Thousands watched young chefs compete in Klaksvík

Kringvarp Føroya reported that several thousand people watched seven chefs under 24 compete in the Arctic Young Chef competition at Seamen’s Day in Klaksvík on Saturday.

The competition was originally launched by NORA and is now organised by the food education programme at the Technical School in Klaksvík.

The contestants had to use monkfish in their starter and blue ling in their main course. They created their own dishes and submitted a list of all ingredients before the competition. The judges then checked whether the final dishes matched the submissions.

Lassi Havsteinsson Klein won the competition, followed by Mogens Højsted in second place and Krista Kjærbo in third.

“I am sure that a competition like this encourages interest in the cooking profession,” Havsteinsson Klein said.

Rannvá Beder, one of the competition’s chef judges, also expects the event to boost interest in the profession.

The competition is a qualifier for a final in Iceland featuring winners from the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Norway and Iceland.

Andras Sigmarsson Jacobsen, head of the cooking programme at the Technical School in Klaksvík and the person responsible for the competition, said he had no doubt that it would be held again.
