21 vessels selected in lottery for mackerel fishing in Norwegian waters from Faroe Islands

Wednesday 7th August 2024 on 17:28 in Faroe Islands

A total of 21 vessels participated in today’s drawing by the Faroese fisheries authority, Vørn, to determine the order for fishing mackerel in Norwegian waters.

Only 12 vessels are allowed to fish at the same time, necessitating the lottery. These selected vessels can now head to Norwegian waters to pursue mackerel as soon as they have applied and received a notice from Vørn. They must commence fishing within 24 hours of receiving the notice; otherwise, the allocation is forfeited, and the vessel moves down the waiting list. Each allocation is valid for only one trip, ensuring that all vessels have an opportunity to fish.

This year, the Faroe Islands have a total quota of 35,191 tons, of which 40 percent can be fished in Norwegian waters.

Fishing is restricted to the use of nets, and trawling is prohibited south of a designated latitude.
