One year after the catastrophic weather event “Hans,” 17 flood victims remain in temporary housing in Nesbyen, uncertain about when they can return home. The floods caused extensive damage, with many victims still awaiting responses from the municipality regarding the potential rebuilding of their homes. The disaster resulted in record-high natural disaster compensation claims exceeding 2 billion Norwegian kroner.

Many flood victims express frustration over the lengthy process and the mental toll it has taken. Mayor Anne Kari Eriksen empathizes with residents and hopes that more answers will come this autumn. The municipality is working to fortify the area against future flooding.

Tore Blyverket, one affected resident, has been living in a makeshift room on his workshop premises for a year, awaiting clarifications from the municipal authorities and insurance companies. His home was completely destroyed in the floods, and the lot remains deserted, leaving him uncertain about his future.

The summer of 2023 saw “Hans” wreak havoc across southern Norway, leaving many homeless. While some have managed to rebuild and move back, many still struggle. Dan Johansen Lundahaug lost everything in the flood and finds himself in a dire situation, grappling with the financial unknowns. Magnus Brennhovd, a first-time homeowner, had to evacuate twice within two weeks and remains homeless, frustrated by the slow progress.

Mayor Eriksen acknowledges the residents’ struggles and recognizes the complex challenges posed by the ground conditions in the area. She expresses hope that residents will receive answers soon and emphasizes plans to enhance protections against future floods.
