A minke whale has stranded on the shore near the small boat harbor in Þorlákshöfn today. The whale is still alive, fighting for its life, and rescue teams are attempting to drag it back into the sea.

Rescue personnel have arrived on the scene to assess how best to assist the animal. Initial reports suggest that the whale may be a calf. Local police are also present to provide assistance. “We received notification about the situation at half past ten this morning,” stated the chief officer of the Southern Iceland Police. “It is currently on dry land, but in consultation with the Marine and Agricultural Food Authority (MAST), attempts will be made to get it back into the water.”

It is possible that efforts will be made to float the whale back into the ocean during the evening tide, depending on its condition. Earlier reports mistakenly identified the whale species; the exact type is still not confirmed at this time. Rescue teams are prepared to return the whale to the water as soon as the opportunity arises.

Water is being poured over the animal to keep it cool, and wet blankets have been placed over it to provide further assistance. The situation remains critical as the rescue efforts continue.
