Around 10,000 join record climate march in Stockholm

Around 10,000 people and 280 organisations took part in a climate demonstration in central Stockholm on Sunday, SVT reported.

The march began shortly after 1pm, with participants of all ages, from young children in prams to older people using walking sticks or poles.

Hedvig Schylander of the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation said the demonstration had set a record for the number of organisations taking part in a climate protest in Sweden. Its purpose was to show support for stronger climate policies.

The participating groups included climate organisations, trade unions, religious communities, researchers, dancers and musicians. Some demonstrators wore clown costumes, while children dressed as animals and folk musicians joined the march. Participants had travelled from more than 70 locations, including some who cycled from southern Sweden and others who took trains from Gällivare.

Alexandra Drotz Ruh attended with her daughter, Billie. She said she wanted to be able to tell her children that she had tried to act on the climate crisis.

Sixteen year old Lily Kjellberg also took part. She said children might not be able to do much at national or global level, but could attend demonstrations to show what they stood for and believed.
