A farmer beneath Mýrdalsjökull says he does not remember seeing as much water in the glacier’s sinkholes as there is now, mbl.is reports.
Benedikt Bragason, who farms at Ytri-Sólheimar beneath the glacier, said he has long expected an eruption from Katla, the volcano beneath Mýrdalsjökull. Katla is considered one of Iceland’s most powerful and dangerous volcanic systems.
“I sincerely hope I do not have to experience an eruption in Katla like the situation when Eyjafjallajökull erupted in 2010. It was extremely difficult,” Benedikt said.
Glaciologist Helgi Björnsson said the ponds often disappear when a glacial flood emerges from beneath the glacier. Cracks then appear in the glacier’s surface.
