Kringvarp Føroya reports that 17 geothermal boreholes have been drilled on Svínoy island this summer, with the final hole now completed. Residents are expected to be able to start using geothermal heating soon.
The project has accelerated the island’s shift towards what residents describe as a greener energy solution. Svínoy has traditionally received oil in barrels.
“With the 17 geothermal boreholes, we will avoid transporting between 200 and 300 barrels to Svínoy,” resident Frímund Hansen said. He described geothermal heating as both an easier and greener solution for the island’s residents.
