Prís had the lowest price for 246 of 248 products in a new price survey by ASÍ’s price monitoring service, while Nettó was the most expensive in 244 cases, mbl.is reports.

The comparison covered prices at the discount supermarkets Bónus, Krónan, Nettó and Prís.

More than ISK 2,000 separates baskets

Prís also had the lowest total price when 25 commonly purchased grocery items were compared. Nettó had the highest price for 24 of the 25 products.

The basket cost ISK 17,433 at Prís, ISK 18,396 at Bónus, ISK 18,767 at Krónan and ISK 19,522 at Nettó. The difference between the cheapest and most expensive baskets was therefore ISK 2,089.

The basket was 5.5 per cent more expensive at Bónus than at Prís, 7.7 per cent more expensive at Krónan and 12 per cent more expensive at Nettó.

Bónus cheaper on two products

The same pattern emerged in a comparison of 248 products available at all four stores. Prís was the cheapest in 246 cases and cost less than both Krónan and Nettó for every product.

Bónus was cheaper than Prís for two products. Half a KJ devil’s food cake cost ISK 959 at Bónus and ISK 985 at Prís, while a vanilla skyr cup from Ísey cost ISK 211 at Bónus and ISK 273 at Prís.

Nettó had the highest price for 244 of the 248 products, or about 98 per cent of those compared.

Prices checked at eight stores

ASÍ’s price monitoring service checked prices at Bónus, Krónan, Nettó, Hagkaup, Krambúðin, Fjarðarkaup, Prís and SPAR. The comparison in the survey compiled results from Bónus, Krónan, Nettó and Prís.

The survey was a direct price comparison and did not assess the quality of the products or the service provided by the stores.
