Landsbanki, property development, restaurants

Plans are being considered for a restaurant in the old Landsbanki building at Austurstræti 11, mbl.is reports. Vignir Guðjónsson of Landsbyggð hf. confirmed the idea, but said it has not entered a formal process.

He said the building’s main hall was a unique space that called for some kind of restaurant operation.

“This is one of the possibilities being considered. It is all at an early stage, but there are great opportunities to create something really exciting,” Guðjónsson said.

Landsbyggð hf. and Eik real estate company are also considering broader development in the area, including building a glass roof over Hafnarstræti and converting it into a pedestrian street if the plans go ahead.

The proposals also include covering two blocks with glass roofs. One is behind the old Landsbanki building, while the other is behind the Eimskip building, which now houses the 1919 hotel. The spaces have not previously been accessible to the public.

Landsbyggð bought the old Landsbanki building last year after Landsbanki moved its headquarters from the building and nearby properties to another location.
