Recent encounters have renewed debate over what place wolves should have in Denmark’s natural environment, DR reports. The predator has caused concern, fascination and discussion after several incidents this summer.

In early August, a wolf approached playing children in private gardens on three occasions in Nørre Nebel, a town in western Jutland. Shortly afterwards, another wolf bared its teeth at a jogger in Bunken Klitplantage, a forest plantation, while apparently trying to protect its pup.

A wolf was also seen walking in front of a family restaurant, again in Nørre Nebel. The incidents led to an intense hunt in the area, during which authorities eventually shot a so-called problem wolf. The case sparked debate over wolf regulation zones and the powers to shoot a wolf.

DR’s article invites readers to test their knowledge of the shy predator and its role in the Danish landscape.
