Strætó will use all available buses to take thousands of people home after Reykjavík’s Culture Night, mbl.is reports. The public transport service will run more frequently on most routes throughout Saturday, while free shuttle buses will operate between Laugardalshöll and Hallgrímskirkja.
Bus routes will be significantly altered because of road closures in central Reykjavík. Stops at Lækjartorg will be out of service, with the main terminus at BSÍ during the day and on Skúlagata after 3pm.
Free shuttles operated by Reykjavík City and Strætó will run from 7am to 11.15pm. This year, they will also stop on Njarðargata between 7am and noon, allowing passengers to watch the Reykjavík Marathon. Drivers are encouraged to park near Laugardalshöll and use the shuttle service.
At 9.30pm, all regular routes will stop running and the entire Strætó fleet will be sent to Sólfar, the Sun Voyager sculpture on Sæbraut. From 10pm to 11pm, buses will take Culture Night visitors to all neighbourhoods in the capital region free of charge. Strætó expects about 70 to 80 buses to take part.
Scheduled services on routes 50 to Akranes, 51 to Selfoss and 55 to Keflavík will leave from Skúlagata at 10.40pm and operate according to the regular fare schedule. After 11pm, modified services will resume under the same restrictions applying during the day. Night buses will begin operating at 1.20am.
Large numbers of Culture Night visitors use Strætó to travel to central Reykjavík each year, as heavy traffic delays are expected on Saturday because of crowds and road closures.
