A test by the Danish Consumer Council Think found PFAS in all nine canned cod roe and fish roe products examined, DR reports.
“When we find PFAS in every can of cod roe, it is a clear sign that these harmful chemicals are widespread in our environment. We need a total ban on PFAS,” said Stine Müller, project manager at the Danish Consumer Council Think’s chemical unit.
The results are consistent with earlier tests by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, which also found PFAS in every cod roe sample examined.
No limit for PFAS in cod roe
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has urged the European Commission to establish limits for PFAS in cod roe. No such limits currently exist.
PFAS is a group of chemicals that break down very slowly and are associated with a weakened immune system and hormone disruption. The substances are found, among other things, in paint, cosmetics, electronics and carpets.
Consumers advised to vary their diet
Despite the findings, the Danish Consumer Council Think continues to assess cod roe as suitable to eat as part of a varied diet.
However, consumers are advised not to eat large amounts of the same product week after week and to vary the types of fish spread they eat.
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration told the consumer council that the Technical University of Denmark is currently examining whether specific new dietary advice on cod roe is needed.
