Tremors recorded near Kleifarvatn and Grindavík on Reykjanes Peninsula

Wednesday 7th August 2024 on 09:53 in Iceland Iceland

The night on the Reykjanes Peninsula was calm, according to the Meteorological Office. However, some tremors were recorded near Kleifarvatn and close to Grindavík. There were no significant swarms reported. The hazard assessment for the region remains unchanged, and activity is still expected to lead to magma intrusion or volcanic eruptions.

The estimated amount of magma under the Svartsengi intrusion area is now similar to that prior to the eruption that began in late May. Two scenarios are considered likely for a potential volcanic eruption: either between Stóra-Skógfell and Sundhnúkur, which is in the same vicinity as the previous May eruption, or further south, near Hagafell or just south of it. In the latter scenario, lava could potentially emerge within Grindavík itself.

Maps detailing the locations of key geological features on the Reykjanes Peninsula have been provided to better illustrate the seismic and volcanic activity in the area.
