Primary school children in Reykjavík will be offered homework assistance at two branches of the City Library, mbl.is reports. The service will be available at the library branches in Kringlan and Gerðuberg during the coming school year.
The initiative is a collaboration between the association Heimili og skóli and Reykjavík City. An agreement was signed by Mayor Hildur Björnsdóttir, Heimili og skóli chairman Sigvaldi Egill Lárusson and Kári Stefánsson, chairman of the board of the Children’s Welfare Fund, which is financing the project.
Reykjavík City will provide the premises, while volunteers from Heimili og skóli will help children and their parents with homework.
“The main aim is to promote equal opportunities for children in Reykjavík and assist those who need help with their homework,” Björnsdóttir said.
She said the service would initially be offered at two branches with good public transport connections. It will be available to all primary school children in Reykjavík.
More information and an announcement about the homework assistance will be published closer to its launch. The partners also hope to expand the number of locations once the project has been operating for some time.
