VR debates whether high interest rates are the best answer

According to mbl.is, the VR trade union is holding a public meeting on the effects of interest rates on people and businesses at its premises in Kringlan on Wednesday.

The meeting runs from 11am to 12.30pm. Its keynote speaker is Jaya Sood, an economist at the New Economics Foundation in the United Kingdom, who will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of interest rates as a tool for controlling inflation.

Jakob Tryggvason, chairman of RSÍ, will also address the meeting.

VR chairwoman Halla Gunnarsdóttir will moderate a panel discussion after the presentations. The panellists are Ásgeir Brynjar Torfason, editor of Vísbending, Jón Sigurðsson, chief executive of Stoðir, and Tómas Brynjólfsson, deputy governor for financial stability at Iceland’s central bank.
