Prosecutor confirms fatal incident took place at Rinnekoti in Espoo
Yle reports that the fatal incident involving police and a man took place at Rinnekoti in Lakisto, Espoo, Finland. The confirmation was given by State Prosecutor Tapio Mäkinen, head of the Police Crimes Unit.
West Uusimaa Police said on Tuesday that officers used a conducted energy weapon during a police assignment overnight on 14 August. According to police, the man behaved aggressively towards people at the scene.
Rinnekoti is operated by Rinnekodit, which is owned by the Helsinki Deaconess Institute and provides social and healthcare services, including services for people with intellectual disabilities.
Mäkinen is leading the investigation. He said it would become clear in the coming days whether a preliminary investigation would be opened.
Police said the man was injured during the incident and was taken by emergency medical services for further treatment. He later died in hospital.
According to his relatives, the victim was a man in his 50s with an intellectual disability who lived in a supported housing unit for people with intellectual disabilities in Espoo.
