A large iceberg is clearly visible in Ísafjarðardjúp, a busy shipping route, from Bolungarvík, mbl.is reports. The photograph was taken by Diego Ragnar Angemi, an Ísafjörður resident and amateur photographer.

Angemi told mbl.is that a friend sent him a picture of the iceberg, prompting him to go to the lighthouse near Bolungarvík to see whether he could spot it.

A group of tourists were taking photographs there but had not noticed the iceberg until Angemi pointed it out. “Then they were completely speechless,” he said.

Angemi sent on his photograph to alert people to the iceberg in case ships were travelling through the area.

There have been several reports of icebergs off the northern Westfjords in early August. In a notice published on 15 August, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said an ice floe had been visible about three kilometres from Litla-Ávík and was drifting west.

In a notice issued on 14 August, the Icelandic Coast Guard’s operations centre told the Meteorological Office that a large iceberg was breaking up just west of Súgandafjörður, about 12 to 15 nautical miles west of the fjord’s mouth.
