Jorvi Hospital in Espoo is opening a new ward building with maternity care, specialist inpatient services for adults and children, imaging services and other hospital support functions, Yle reports. The services will open in stages from late August 2026.

The maternity unit includes 12 delivery rooms and three operating rooms for caesarean sections. Eleven of the delivery rooms have access to a birthing pool, and each room includes a cabinet bed for a support person. Space has also been reserved for a yoga sling.

Nearly all patient rooms have been designed as family rooms, allowing relatives to visit without fixed visiting hours. After giving birth, patients move to the postnatal ward, where rooms include facilities such as a refrigerator for the family’s food.

Mothers and babies are not separated unless there is a particularly compelling reason. As a result, the patient rooms for newborns also include a bed.

The building’s other facilities include single rooms in the cardiology and pulmonary diseases ward, improving patients’ privacy. The building also contains colourful murals for children, waiting areas with activities and art intended to support the wellbeing of patients and staff.

The murals leading to the children’s reception areas depict plants, nature and animals from the garden of a manor that previously stood in the area. The building’s grounds include a playground open to everyone.

The facilities and changes to operations were planned in cooperation with Jorvi Hospital staff. The 259 million euro construction project stayed on schedule and within budget.

“We have aimed to create aesthetically clean and beautiful spaces,” said Tuija Ylä-Rautio, an architect with HUS’s property and premises services.
