Foreign citizens make up 69% of Mýrdalshreppur residents

Foreign citizens account for 68.7% of residents in Mýrdalshreppur municipality, according to new data from Registers Iceland reported by mbl.is.

The figures, based on registrations as of Tuesday, show that 798 of the municipality’s 1,162 residents hold foreign citizenship. Across Iceland, foreign citizens account for an average of 20.2% of registered residents.

The proportion varies considerably between municipalities. Skaftárhreppur has the second-highest share, at 47.3%, followed by Bláskógabyggð at 40.1%. Kjósarhreppur has the lowest proportion, with 17 foreign citizens among its 319 residents, or 5.3%.

By region, the highest proportion is in Suðurnes, where foreign citizens make up 32.1% of residents. The Westfjords follow at 24.1%, while Northeast Iceland has the lowest share, at 12.8%.
