Concerns have long been raised about the melting of Greenland’s ice sheet potentially impacting the Gulf Stream, which is integral to maintaining relatively mild winter weather in the Faroe Islands and Northern Europe. Recent research from Utrecht University in the Netherlands suggests that the Gulf Stream is weakening and may even halt by the 2030s. Such a change would significantly alter the climate in the Faroe Islands and across Northern Europe.

However, this new research conflicts with findings from the Faroe Marine Research Institute. Karin Margreta Húsgarð Larsen, deputy director at the Institute, states that they have not observed any decrease in the ocean currents. The Institute has been monitoring these currents for the past 30 years.
