Teachers describe themselves as playful regardless of age or educational level, and playfulness remains an important part of their professional skills and wellbeing throughout their careers, according to a survey by the University of Oulu, reported by Yle.

The survey included 123 teachers and student teachers from various fields of education.

The study found that playfulness remained relatively stable across age groups. Even experienced teachers retained their curiosity, imagination and sense of humour throughout their careers.

The findings challenge the assumption that playfulness declines with age or years spent working. The researchers found no statistically significant differences between younger and older teachers.

According to the study, teachers view playfulness as a personal quality as well as a resource linked to creativity, interaction, flexibility and supporting learning.

Playfulness was not associated with childish behaviour, but with curiosity, creativity, a sense of humour and the ability to build positive connections with other people.

“A playful teacher can view situations from new perspectives, find new ways to solve challenges and inspire people to participate. Playfulness is part of pedagogical competence,” university researcher Signe Siklander said in a university press release.

The study has been published in the academic journal Teachers and Teaching. The research article has been nominated for the Innovative Research Award.
