Denmark’s new naval vessels are to be built in Frederikshavn, but a year after the decision, the shipyard and roads needed for construction are still not in place, DR reports.

Frederikshavn Mayor Jon Andersen of the Liberal Party said work was progressing behind the scenes to establish the necessary foundations before construction begins.

“It is about having the right basis in place before breaking ground physically,” Andersen said.

The preparations include reaching agreements with landowners, planning new roads and creating the required legal framework, he said.

Andersen compared the process with the development of Krudten, an ammunition factory in Elling, north of Frederikshavn.

“It also took some time to get started with Krudten, but now construction is moving very quickly out there,” he said.

Frederikshavn Municipality holds regular meetings with the Danish military about the project and is satisfied with the progress, according to Andersen.

Under the naval plan, 26 ships are to be built in Frederikshavn. They include four new environmental vessels that will also be capable of laying mines in Danish waters.
