Police await questioning of injured driver in Helsinki bus crash

Police have not yet been able to question the injured driver after two buses collided in Helsinki’s Myllypuro district on Saturday, Yle reports. The cause of the crash remains unclear.

Tommi Lehtonen, the duty investigation leader and a detective chief inspector, said the driver of the bus that hit the other bus was injured. Police do not yet know how serious the injuries are.

“No one has been interviewed yet. The investigation is still at a very early stage, and nothing new has emerged,” Lehtonen said.

According to information released by the authorities, one person was seriously injured and seven others sustained minor injuries. Five children were taken for further treatment. A total of 29 people were on the two buses, but police said not everyone was injured.

The crash happened on Saturday afternoon when one bus hit the rear of another. Police, rescue services and emergency medical services were alerted at 1:55 p.m.

Traffic on Kehä I between the Myllypuro junction and Itäkeskus was closed after the crash. It had been restored on one carriageway before 3:30 p.m., while police later said traffic returned to normal after 5 p.m.

Police are preliminarily investigating the crash as aggravated endangerment of traffic safety and suspect the driver of the bus that caused the collision of a traffic offence. Helsinki Regional Transport said the buses operated on routes 554 and 562.
