Three runners set out on Saturday morning to complete the approximately 60-kilometre Great Eyjafjörður Loop, mbl.is reported. The run aims to raise awareness of charitable causes and encourage people to contribute to their community.

Hörður Halldórsson, Cris Wolfensberger and Axel Ernir are running the entire route. Arnór Bliki Hallmundsson, a history teacher at Verkmenntaskólinn in Akureyri, is accompanying them on an electric scooter.

Hallmundsson is also telling the runners about the history of Skurður and points of interest along the way.

When mbl.is spoke to Hörður, the group had completed 34 kilometres and reached Hrútsstaðir near Fellshlíð. A more difficult section was ahead, with more gravel, headwinds and uphill stretches, he said.

Five people joined the runners in the morning and went with them as far as Kristnes. Hörður said others could still join for part of the route. The group planned to reach Munkaþverá after about half an hour and take a short break there.

The runners have organised similar projects before. On one occasion, they walked the Little Eyjafjörður Loop wearing full firefighting equipment. They later organised a relay from Akureyri to Selfoss, involving fire brigades from around Iceland.

A larger project had originally been planned this time, but after various difficulties arose, the group decided to organise an informal event over the weekend. Hörður said the purpose remained to encourage people to consider giving back to their community.

The group’s progress can be followed on its Facebook page.
