Yes and no camps level in Iceland EU referendum poll

Support for voting yes and no is statistically tied ahead of Iceland’s referendum on whether to restart membership talks with the European Union, mbl.is reports, citing Icelandic broadcaster RUV.

Among respondents who expressed a preference in Gallup’s latest National Pulse poll, 51.5 percent said they would vote yes on August 29, while 48.5 percent said they would vote no. The difference is not statistically significant, with a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.

Seven percent of respondents were undecided and 1 percent declined to answer.

People living outside the capital area were more likely to support a no vote, while those with university education were more likely to support a yes vote.

Only 14 percent of respondents who do not support the government said they intended to vote yes. Among government supporters, 89 percent said they would vote yes.

In June, 52 percent of respondents who had taken a position said they would vote yes, compared with 48 percent who planned to vote no.

The poll was conducted from August 1 to 13 among a total sample of 4,128 people. The response rate was 41.9 percent, and the margin of error for the yes and no figures was 2.5 percentage points.
