Korda to launch after Icelandic telecom merger

mbl.is reports that the merged operations of Farice ehf., Öryggisfjarskipti ehf. and the technical division of Neyðarlínan ohf. will officially begin operating under the name Korda on 1 September.

The merger decision was announced in December 2025. Farice and Neyðarlínan’s technical division will become part of Korda ehf., while Öryggisfjarskipti ehf. will operate as a subsidiary. Korda will be fully owned by the Icelandic state.

Korda will operate the submarine telecommunications cables connecting Iceland to the rest of the world, the TETRA security communications system and technical systems supporting emergency services, civil protection, seafarers, responders, telecommunications companies, public bodies and other essential operations.

The company will also operate a backup communications link to the rest of the world through a satellite system.

Strengthening Iceland’s communications links

The merger aims to strengthen the operational security, network and information security, and resilience of critical infrastructure against cyber threats, natural hazards and other operational risks.

“Korda will create a strong telecommunications company with a clear role: to ensure safe, reliable and robust telecommunications links for Iceland,” Þorvarður Sveinsson, Farice’s chief executive and Korda’s incoming chief executive, said in a statement.

The company will be known as Korda Networks in English. Korda is an established Icelandic word meaning “cord”.
