Over 12,000 runners register for Reykjavik Marathon

More than 12,000 runners have registered for the Íslandsbanki Reykjavik Marathon, which will take place on 22 August, mbl.is reports.

The largest numbers are registered for the half marathon and 10-kilometre race, with nearly 5,700 entries for the 10-kilometre event and 3,500 for the half marathon. More than 1,400 people have registered for the full marathon.

About 22 per cent of those currently registered are international competitors, including more than 800 from the United States. Registration numbers are similar to those at the same point last year, and entries remain open at rmi.is/skraning.

“The first Reykjavik Marathon took place in 1984, with 214 runners taking part. The marathon became the Íslandsbanki Reykjavik Marathon in 1997, when there were 3,076 participants. It will be exciting to see how many runners take part this year,” Hrefna Hlín Sveinbjörnsdóttir, director of events at the Reykjavik Sports Union, said in a statement.

A total of 17,786 people ran in last year’s event, more than 3,000 above the 2024 figure.

A new race route was announced in June, and the starting line will now be at the University of Iceland.

Fundraising passes 2 billion krónur

Fundraising for charities has progressed strongly this year, with about 109 million Icelandic krónur already collected.

Sveinbjörnsdóttir said the fundraising was extremely important to the organisations involved. In total, more than 2 billion krónur is estimated to have been raised for charitable causes since fundraising began in 2006.

“Amounts both large and small are very important to the organisations and have been used for many necessary projects that benefit our society,” she said.
